CNY09 - Lunar New Year Fair & Flower Market : Lunar New Year Fairs are common a few days before the Chinese New Year. The biggest Fair in Hong Kong is held at the Victoria Park and comprises of a large Flower Market and hundreds of other stalls selling food, toys and good luck souvenirs. Held on the eve of chinese new year, the Fair is part of custom, hang nin siu (行年宵, literally: walk the year night) or hang fa shi (行花市, literally: walk the flower market). The activity is at it's peak around midnight as the fair closes before dawn on New Year day. Vendors try to sell all flowers before close, and often don't take back any leftovers that could not be sold. The crowd, the colors, the food - altogether it's a completely unique experience to be there

My First Hike - across Lamma Island : I am now a biiig boy. I can walk, I can run and I can go on a hike. Here I take mom and dad across Lamma Island - from Sok Kwu Wan - treading uphill and crossing over to the other side of the mountain all the way to Yung Shue Wan. On the way, I get a peek into the Japanese Kamikaze caves, and we break for a little bit of waves and sand at the Hung Shing Yeh Beach. I sure had a lot of fun

Bun Festival : The Cheung Chau Bun Festival is a hundred year legacy that makes the Cheung Chau island of Hong Kong alive every May. For three days, everyone on the island switches to a vegetarian diet, and then a procession is held on the day of the festival. The day sees a huge crowd flocking from all over Hong Kong onto the small island, making crowd control measures a necessity. Buns are stored on conical stands and distributed along Come midnight, and hundreds of young men hurry up to the three bun towers, tearing off all the buns, and putting them in a bag or spreading them over the crowd. It is not too different here in Hong Kong, given Hong Kong's reputation to grab every opportunity to flood the city into a light-studded carnival. It's also an opportunity for a photographer to go around, and shoot to your heart. That's precisely what I did. It is always a good time when festive spirits are high :-)

CNY09 - Worlds Happiest Party : The concept of a Chinese New Year Parade originated in America (surprise), but has since then made it's way back to europe and Asia, not to forget China too. The parade in Hong Kong is a very colorful event that is attended by thousands of people on the footpaths of Tsim Sha Tsui. 2009 was no different, the parade was as colorful as ever, and the wait in the first row of the crowd was worth the event. It wasn't that much worth the pictures though. As the evening fell and the parade started, I found myself standing in the worst possible location - pretty low light (photographers nightmare), and a spot where the parade would never pause for performances. Fortunately, my f/1.4 lens helped me salvage this gallery out of an otherwise tough situation

An Ancient Palace : I am going to repeat this a few times, but I was born and raised in northern Madhya Pradesh in India. Datia is a small town 69 km southeast of my hometown, Gwalior. It is the administrative center of Datia District and was formerly the seat of the eponymous princely state in the British Raj. Datia's seven-storeyed palace built entirely of stone and brick by Raja Bir Singh Deo in 1614, is considered to be one of the finest examples of Bundela architecture in the country. It is also one of the finest examples of Hindu domestic architecture available in north India. Within the palace are some fine wall paintings of the Bundela school. So, of course, it was nearby, and it was fun, and we went there

Tai Lam Country Park : It was a fun hike across the Route Twisk on the section 9 of MacLehose Trail. Part of the longest hiking trail in Hong Kong, Tai Lam Country Park is located south of Yuen Long and east of Tuen Mun, in the western New Territories of Hong Kong. Overlooking the urban Hong Kong lie the foresty stretch which at times would give an impression of being lost in the woods.... and lost we were, indeed. Until we found a group of cyclists who guided us down the hill and back into the city :-)

Gwalior Fort : Reiteration - Gwalior is my hometown. Located in northern India, 80km south of famous city of Agra, Gwalior occupies a strategic location in the Gird region of North India. Perhaps the most I remember about the city now is the extreme temperature swings it goes from Summer to Winter - the highest recorded temperature was 47C and the lowest was -1C; and scarce rainfall. I remember this, because thats the only factor that scares me going back to the city :-( But then, I still go back, and this time come back with pictures of Gwalior Fort. The seemingly invincible Fort stands on an isolated hill (2.4 x 0.8 kn, 100m elevation) and contains a number of historic buildings

Shing Mun Country Park : Wilson Trail - Section 7. Intersecting with various trails in the Shing Mun Country Park, most notably the Meclehose trail, this is a section of easy to moderate difficulty. Hosting a stretch of the Shing Mun Reservoir and later a jungle, the hike comes down back near the city via a steep assembly of steps

Sanchi : On a hill overlooking the plain, about 40 km from Bhopal, the site of Sanchi comprises a group of Buddhist monuments (monolithic pillars, stupas, temples and monasteries) all in different states of conservation most of which date back to the 2nd and 1st centuries B.C. It is the oldest Buddhist sanctuary in existence and was a major Buddhist centre in India until the 12th century A.D. The site is now designated UNESCO World Heritage Center Did you read Bhopal above. Yeah, thats right, and thats what took me here (my parents currently stay in Bhopal). A pleasent surprise was a very nice group of Japanese pilgrims paying a visit at the same time (see picture)

Bhojeshwar Temple : Another Bhopal neighbourhood, 28km from the state capital, lies the small town of Bhojpur. Bhojpur is famous for the incomplete Bhojeshwar temple, which is dedicated to Shiva. The temple houses the largest Shiva lingam in India, which is 2.3m (7.5 ft) tall and 5.5m (18 ft) in circumference and is crafted out a single rock. So of course, thats what we went to see. The good part was - I got one of my best candid portrait shots on this trip (look out for the girl on the temple steps)

A Real Village : If Gwalior is my hometown, Bilgaon can be considered my native village. Its my ancestoral village, and though my dad would associate himself more with the place, I have had a slight flavour of a real village when I was a kid. I vaguely remember short trips that we used to make sometime in summer holidays and all the mango and sugarcane that we could grab depending on the season. Those are faint memories from a very distant past. So, on this trip, I thought, maybe I should get a hang of the village life once again. A village in Morena District of northern Madhya Pradesh, 60km from Gwalior, the place lies in the heart of the Chambal division once famous for the Bandit problem not so long ago (its a much peaceful neighbourhood now)

Temple Town of Sonagir : This sacred Jain hill lies 3 km to the North West of Datia and 65 km from Gwalior. There are 77 Jain temples, built in rows on the hill and its slopes, and date back to the 17th century. Of these the temple dedicated to Chandranatha, the 8th of the 24 Tirthankaras, is quite a large one and the most beautiful. A large annual fair is held here in the month of Chaitra (April). I could not resist the sight and took pictures from far away, of the sunset across the hill. I preferred this because (i) its not allowed to photograph on the hill itself (in fact there are restriction on taking leather, rubber and similar stuff into the temple area); and also (ii) because I have myself very little understanding of the religious aspects of Jain culture

Wilson Trail - Section 2 : Hong Kong is a pleasure place for hiking. Here we take up the section 2 of Wilson Trail and go uphill a couple of times. Wilson Trail is a 70+ km hike spanning across the New Territories, Kowloon and the Hong Kong Island. Section 2 is a little over 6km and comprises of 2 hills - mt butler and Jardine's lookout What we got were some breathtaking views of the urban Hong Kong cluster on one side and the all natural melody of the reservoirs, mountains and sea on the other. What added to the moment were the dark cloud formations and finally a burst of rain that had us drenched by the time we finished our hike :-)

A Sunset at the Lake : Another day, another sunset. This time, by the banks of the Upper Lake (Bada Talaab) - a large artificial lake which lies on the Western side of Bhopal, the capital city of the state of Madhya Pradesh. Spanning 31 Km2, it is a major source of potable water to the residents of the city, serving around 40% of the residents with nearly 30 million gallons per day. Statistics aside, its a nice place to spend the evening, with a nice sunset, boating and watersport activities and even some foodstalls etc at a designated shore. And, if you want it, there are birds to feed and sails to watch

Macro with Extension Tubes : I waited a long time to shoot macro with my kit. The biggest hurdle was the lack of a macro lens. The money was (and is still) too much. So there come my so far unused kenko extension tube set coupled with the Thrifty Fifty (Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II) and my Canon EOS 400D. I would say I was more than satisfied with my first macro outing. Walked around my apartment for about an hour to settle for these three dozen exposures --Enjoy

Po Lin Monastery : Po Lin Monastery is a Buddhist monastery, located on Ngong Ping Plateau, on Lantau Island, Hong Kong. The monastery was founded in 1906 by three monks visiting from Jiangsu and was initially known as "The Big Hut". It was renamed to its present name in 1924. The main temple houses 3 bronze statues of the Buddha representing his past, present and future lives as well as many Buddhist scriptures. Tian Tan Buddha, a giant Buddha statue completed in 1993, is an extension of the monastery.

The Great Wall of China, Mutianyu Section : Mutianyu is a section of the Great Wall of China located in Huairou County 70km northeast of Beijing. First built in the mid-6th century, it has the largest construction scale and best quality among all sections of Great Wall. Built mainly with granite, the wall is 7-8 meters high and the top is 4-5 meters wide. Comparing with other sections of Great Wall, Mutianyu section possesses some unique construction characteristics. # Watchtowers and over-towering pass densely scatter along this section of Great Wall - exactly, 22 watchtowers in the 22500-meter-long wall. # Both the outer and inner parapets are crenellated with merlons, so that shots could be fired at the enemy on both sides - a feature very rare on other parts of the Great Wall. # The Mutianyu Pass consists of 3 watchtowers, one big in the center and two smaller on both sides. Standing on the same terrace, the three watchtowers are connected each other inside and compose a rarely seen structure among all sections of Great Wall. Besides, this section of Great Wall is surrounded by woodland and streams. The Forest-coverage Rate is over 90 percent

That makes it the longest intact city wall in China (and the world) The top of the wall is like a wide roadway (even broader than the section of Great Wall that we visited). I got a 2009 date code, and relatively speaking, I think I have a very sharp copy of this lens. It's a bit of many things - long, versatile, heavy, sharp, relatively slow (for my taste). My DIY Softbox : This is a very basic DIY, home-made, cheap, foldable setup that I use for product photography - mainly for my gear and anything interesting that is about a foot long or smaller in size. All I have here is: 4 sheets of polystyrene foam - commonly known as thermocol, or styrofoam (which actually is a Dow Chemical trademark) - making top, back, left and right walls The left/right walls have a large window of foam cut out, and a silver/white sheet of paper pasted to fill the window I simply use long pushpins to assemble the box on the fly. when folded, its just 4 sheets of foam some regular paper sheets (white / blue / black) for use as a backdrop. I just pin the sheet on back wall and let it flow to the bottom without any hard fold showing up A vivitar 285HV and canon 430EX flashes illuminate the side windows using wireless radio triggers. I usuallu shoot the flashes in manual mode, adjusting the output and distance from the box based on lighting needs
